…そうした音楽をパンク･ロックpunk rockと呼び，その支持者で現状に不満をもつ若者たちをパンクスと呼んだ。しかし，閉塞した状況を打ち破りたいという気持ちで一致していたかにみえた彼らの活動も意外と長続きせず，78年ころにはさまざまに変質し，早くもパンク以後がとりざたされるようになり，その後の多様化を視野に入れたニューウェーブnew waveという包括的な呼び方が一般化する。どこまでをニューウェーブに含めるかは人によってさまざまだが，80年代に入ってからの主流となったのは，いわゆるエレクトロニック･ポップ･ミュージックelectronic pop musicで，これはサウンドの感覚からいえば確かにパンク以後の流れのなかに位置しているものの，その姿勢はかなり商業主義に接近した若者向けの大衆音楽であって，当初のパンクの姿勢とは大きく隔たっている。…
