Order Cetacea, Suborder Mysticeti, Family Baleen, Genus Baleen. Maximum body length about 15.5m. Maximum weight 20-25t. Length after birth about 4m. Body color is black on the back, bluish black or blackish brown, and white underside. The border between the back and belly is gray with a wavy or gradated pattern. The body is streamlined and slender, but more stocky than the sei whale. There are two blowholes, and the blowhole is estimated to be 3-5m high. The head is flat, narrow, and pointed, with a V-shape, and there are three ridges from the tip of the snout to the blowhole. The dorsal fin is located in the posterior two-thirds of the body, is relatively large, and is a right-angled isosceles triangle with a blunt tip that hangs backwards. There are 40-70 ridges, reaching the navel. The baleen is 250-379 on each side on the upper jaw inside the mouth, and can be up to 50 cm long. The plate-like part of the baleen is slightly bluish gray, and the ciliated part is very coarse and beige or brownish gray. Usually, they move around in groups of one or two, but they can form schools of 10-20 at feeding grounds. They are often accompanied by schools of skipjack tuna. They feed mainly on schooling fish such as sardines and pacific saury, but also eat small planktonic crustaceans. They open their mouths and lunge forward to prey, swallowing them. They live in tropical and subtropical regions, and do not migrate to the polar regions beyond 40 degrees latitude in both hemispheres. There are pelagic and coastal species. They were caught off the coast of Japan until commercial whaling was abolished in 1988.

クジラ目ヒゲクジラ亜目ナガスクジラ科ナガスクジラ属。最大体長約 15.5m。最大体重 20～25t。出生体長は 4m程度。体色は背部が黒色，青黒色または黒褐色で腹部が白色である。背と腹の境はねずみ色で波形やぼかし模様を呈する。体型は流線形で細長いが，イワシクジラよりずんぐりしている。噴気孔は2個で，噴気は高さ3～5mと推測される。頭部は扁平で幅が狭くとがってV字状を呈し，吻端から噴気孔にかけて3本の稜線がある。背鰭 (せびれ) は体の後方3分の2に位置し，比較的大きく，直角二等辺三角形状で，先端は鈍く，後方に垂れる。畝 (うね) は 40～70本あり，臍 (へそ) まで達する。くじらひげは口内の上顎上面に片側で 250～379枚あり，最長 50cm程度である。ひげの板状部はやや青みを帯びた灰色で，繊毛部はきわめて粗く，ベージュ色または茶ねずみ色である。通常1～2頭で行動することが多いが，索餌場では 10～20頭の群れをなすことがある。カツオの群れがしばしば付随する。イワシ，サンマ等の群集性魚類を主食とするが，浮遊性小甲殻類も食べる。口を開けて突進し飲み込んで捕食する。熱帯から亜熱帯に生息し，両半球の緯度 40゜をこえて極地方へ回遊することはない。外洋性のものと沿岸性のものがいる。 1988年商業捕鯨停止まで，日本沿岸で捕獲されていた。
