Mabillon - Mabillon (English spelling) Jean Mabillon

Mabillon - Mabillon (English spelling) Jean Mabillon

French priest and historian. Born in the mountain village of Saint-Piermont in northeastern France. After studying at the parish seminary in Reims, he entered the Abbey of Saint-Remy in the same city in 1653, and after becoming a priest he moved to the Abbey of Corby, then to the Abbey of Saint-Denis in Paris, and from 1664 to the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. All of these monasteries belonged to the newly established Order of Saint-Maur in 1618. Historical theology and paleographical research were popular in this order, and Mabillon was a representative figure in this field. While directing the collection of historical materials through the well-established communication network of the Order of Saint-Maur, he published a series of large editions, including The Lives of the Saints of Saint Benedict, The Collected Works of Saint Bernard, and The Collected Works of Saint Augustine. His De re diplomatica (1681) in particular immortalized his name as the work that established an unshakable foundation for paleography in Western Europe. At that time he was described as the most learned and yet most humble man in France.
