[Modern and contemporary mystical movements and their surroundings]
Western mysticism after the Renaissance focused on the relationship between wisdom and mystical experience, in keeping with the spirit of the times. Representatives of this movement include Nicholas of Cusanus, who sought to understand God as the "coincidence of opposites" through knowledge beyond knowledge, that is, the "docta ignorantia" (knowledge of ignorance), and Spinoza, who emphasized reason.
