A philosophical leader of the Philippine Revolution. Born in Tanauan, Batangas, southern Luzon. His father was a village chief and a virtuous family, but because of poverty, he studied hard and graduated from the law school of the University of Santo Tomas at the age of 30. Since his student days, he had participated in the Philippine National Union led by Rizal and other groups and was involved in the movement to reform Spanish rule. Soon after the start of the Philippine Revolution in 1896, he was imprisoned, but was released after a few months due to paralysis of both legs. In June 1898, he was asked by Aguinaldo to become his political advisor, and from the establishment of the revolutionary government to the establishment of the Malolos Republic and the administration of the cabinet he himself formed (January to May 1899), he continued to resist the revolution from being used for the class interests of the big capitalist groups.

フィリピン革命の思想的指導者。ルソン島南部のバタンガス州タナワン町出身。父は村長を務めた徳望家であったが貧しかったので，苦学して30歳でサント･トマス大学法学部を卒業した。学生時代からリサールのフィリピン民族同盟などに参加してスペイン統治改革運動に従事していたので，1896年フィリピン革命が始まるとまもなく投獄されたが，両足麻痺症のため数ヵ月で釈放された。98年6月アギナルドに請われて政治顧問となり，革命政府の設立からマロロス共和国の樹立，自ら組閣した内閣の運営(99年1～5月)まで，一貫して革命が大資本家グループの階級利害に利用されないよう抵抗し続けた。
