1717‐80 Empress of the House of Habsburg of Austria. Reigned 1740-80. Eldest daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. Married Franz Stephan, Duke of Lorraine, for love. After her father's death, she inherited all of the Habsburg territories in one go under the Pragmatische Sanktion in 1740. However, she faced the War of the Austrian Succession when Frederick II of Prussia occupied Silesia and Elector Karl Albert of Bavaria claimed the inheritance. She received aid by recognizing the privileges of the Hungarian nobility, and with the support of England and the Netherlands, she made a peace treaty with Dresden in 1745.
