The Frog (Aristophanes) - Frog

...He is the perfector of Attic comedy, a genre of literature that occupies a unique place in the history of world literature, and also the witness to its death. He is said to have composed 44 comedies, from "Daitales" (427 BC), written before he was 20 years old, to "Plutus" (388 BC), of which 11 remain almost completely intact, namely "Acharnians" (425 BC), "Knights" (424 BC), "Clouds" (423 BC), "Bee" (422 BC), "Peace" (421 BC), "The Birds" (414 BC), "Women's Peace" and "Women Celebrating the Thesmophoria" (both 411 BC), "Frogs" (405 BC), "The Council of Women" (392 BC), and "Plutus" (411 BC). All of them can be read in Japanese translation. The unique world of Aristophanes and Attic comedy is that it depicts highly realistic problems and situations such as the Assembly, generals, demagogues, wars, and peace treaties, on the stage, where a single Athenian citizen who is powerless in a practical sense (typically a farmer from the suburbs who suffered the greatest damage from the destruction of his farmland in the Peloponnesian War) brings reality to its knees by using the power of imagination and expression, the last remaining power of the individual.
