Hoonko - Hoonko

This is a Buddhist service held on the anniversary of the death of Shinran, the founder of Jodo Shinshu, to express gratitude and appreciation. It is also called Gosho-ki, Shichi-ya, Shichi-chu-ya, Oshimotsuki, Otorikoshi, or Oko. Shinran passed away on November 28, 1262 (Kōchō 2), at the age of 90, so a Buddhist service has been held for seven days and nights from November 21 to 28 every year since ancient times. Among the ten Shinshu schools, the Hongan-ji and Takada schools currently hold the service from January 9 to 16 in the solar calendar, but the Kosho, Bukkoji, Kibe, and Sanmonto schools hold it in November, and the others hold it in December. In addition, the debate held on the anniversary of the death of Kakuban, the founder of the Shingon sect, known as Kakubanki, is also called Hoonko. Kakubanki is also held in the Buzan and Chisan sects of Shingon Buddhism.

浄土真宗の開祖親鸞(しんらん)の忌日に、報恩謝徳のために行われる法会(ほうえ)。別に御正忌(ごしょうき)、お七夜(しちや)、お七昼夜(しちちゅうや)、御霜月(おしもつき)、御取越(おとりこし)あるいは御講(おこう)ともいわれる。親鸞は1262年（弘長2）11月28日、世寿90歳で入寂(にゅうじゃく)したので、古来毎年11月21日より28日までの七昼夜にわたって法会が行われた。真宗十派のうち、現在は本願寺派・高田派では太陽暦に換算して1月9日より16日に行っているが、興正(こうしょう)派・仏光寺(ぶっこうじ)派・木辺(きべ)派・三門徒派は11月に、その他は12月に勤修している。また新義真言(しんごん)宗の宗祖覚鑁(かくばん)の忌日に修せられる論議会いわゆる覚鑁忌のことも報恩講とよばれる。覚鑁忌はこのほか真言宗豊山(ぶざん)派・智山(ちさん)派でも行われる。
