Born: July 26, 1893, Berlin [Died] July 6, 1959. Berlin. A German-born, American-born painter and printmaker. He studied at the Dresden School of Fine Arts and the Berlin School of Applied Arts, and lived in Paris for a short time. He served in the First World War, and, faced with the chaos of postwar Germany, produced works that contained dark humor. He was a central figure in the Berlin Dada movement that began in 1918, and produced a series of works that were sharp social satire. In the mid-1920s, he adopted a strong realistic technique along with O. Dix and M. Beckmann, and took a position in Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). In 1932, he went into exile in New York, and for a time in the late 1930s, he painted works depicting nude bodies in New England landscapes, but with the outbreak of World War II, he returned to satirical realism with strong social concerns. He obtained American citizenship in 1938, and died three weeks after returning to Berlin in 1959.
