An old town in Sado County in the central-southern part of Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. Most of the area is in the hilly region of Kosado, and in addition to producing rice, the town cultivates vegetables, fruit trees, and livestock. Shinmachi, the center of the town, overlooks Mano Bay and was the center of ancient Sado development, with historical sites such as the remains of Kokubunji Temple (historic site), Myozenji Temple, Danpu Ruins, and the Mano Mausoleum of Emperor Juntoku. In March 2004, it merged with Ryotsu City, Sado County's Aikawa Town, Sawada Town, Kanai Town, Niiho Village, Hatano Town, Hamo Town, Ogi Town, and Akadomari Village to form Sado City. 67.09 km2 . 6,148 people (2003). 新潟県佐渡島中南部にある佐渡郡の旧町。大半は小佐渡の丘陵地で,米を産するほか,野菜,果樹栽培,畜産を行う。中心の新町は真野湾に臨み,古代の佐渡開発の中心地で,国分寺跡(史跡),妙宣寺,壇風遺跡,順徳上皇の真野陵などの史跡がある。2004年3月両津市,佐渡郡相川町,佐和田町,金井町,新穂村,畑野町,羽茂町,小木町,赤泊村と合併し,佐渡市となる。67.09km2。6148人(2003)。
