Generally, a financial market (short-term financial market) where economic entities borrow or lend funds for a short period of time is called a money market. The period is usually up to about one year, but there is no strict definition. In each country, the central bank is the most important participant in the money market, and the supply and demand of funds by the central bank in the money market has a significant impact on money market interest rates, which in turn influences the behavior of private banks and other participants in the money market.

一般に，経済主体が短い期間，資金を借り入れたり貸し付けたりする金融市場(短期金融市場)をマネー･マーケットと呼ぶ。その期間は通常，最大限1年程度とされるが，厳密な定義はない。各国とも，中央銀行はマネー･マーケットの最も重要な参加者であり，マネー･マーケットにおける中央銀行の資金の供給，あるいは需要がマネー･マーケット利子率に重要な影響を与え，そこに参加している民間銀行その他の行動を左右することになる。
