A city in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Its population was 69,163 (1995). The northern part is at the end of the Joso Plateau, and the southern part is an alluvial plain formed by the Kogai River, a tributary of the Tone River. To the west is Ushiku Marsh. In the Middle Ages, it was on the border between Hitachi and Shimousa Provinces, and in the Edo Period it was an exclave of the Sendai Domain. In 1900, the Ryugasaki Railway (now the Kanto Railway Ryugasaki Line) was opened, connecting the city center with the current JR Joban Line Sanuki Station, and the city flourished as a distribution center for cocoons and Ryugasaki cotton, and the silk-reeling industry also flourished. A noodle industry also developed. After the war, a construction materials factory was built on the site of a military factory from World War II, and now a large industrial complex has been developed on the northern plateau, with machinery, electrical equipment, and other industries thriving.
