A folk song from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. There are two theories about the origin of the song: one is that it was started by village girls who were in love with a beautiful monk named Gennyo who lived at Tenneiji Temple in Higashiyama, Aizu, and the other is that it was started by young villagers who were in love with a beautiful woman named Genjo. Originally, it was a "kakeuta" (a type of song) where talented singers would gather at night during festivals and fairs at shrines and temples, sing in conversation, have conversations in song, or present new songs. Perhaps because the melody is simple, it has not spread to other regions and has been sung mainly in the Aizu region. A verse from "Gennyo-bushi" is used in the lyrics of the widely sung folk song "Aizu Bandai-san."
