Egyptian priest and historian of the early 3rd century BCE. Latin name Manetho. Date of birth and death unknown. Around 280 BCE, he wrote the three-volume History of Egypt in Greek using ancient documents from Heliopolis. His division of the period from King Menes to Alexander the Great into 30 dynasties, which he then divided into three parts: the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms, remains the basis of Egyptian chronology to this day. The original text has been lost, but excerpts from it have been quoted and passed down in the writings of Jewish historians and Christian church fathers.
