…Whole notes consist of only the note head, but half notes and below have a vertical line called a stem attached above or below the note head, and eighth notes and below have a hook attached to the end of the stem (Figure a).

The longest note (rest) in common use is the whole note (rest), the shortest is the sixty-fourth note (rest), and a note (rest) is always twice as long as the next lower note (rest).
