Shizue Kato

Shizue Kato
1897-2001 A women's activist and politician from the Showa to Heisei eras.
Born on March 2, 1897. Married Baron Ishimoto Keikichi in 1914. Travelled to the US in 1919 and became sympathetic to M. Sanger, founding the Japan Birth Control League in 1931. Developed a women's liberation movement, and was arrested in 1937 in the Popular Front Incident. In 1944, she remarried Kato Kanju. In 1946, she became the first woman to serve in the House of Representatives (elected twice, Socialist Party). In 1950, she became a member of the House of Councillors (elected four times). In 1974, she retired from politics and became president of the Japan Family Planning Federation. In 1988, she received the United Nations Population Award. In 1995, she became president of the International Family Planning Foundation. Died on December 22, 2001. Age 104. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Gakushuin Women's College. Her maiden name was Hirota. Her real name was Shizue. Her works include "One Straight Path."

明治30年3月2日生まれ。大正3年男爵石本恵吉と結婚。8年渡米しM.サンガーに共鳴,昭和6年日本産児調節連盟を設立した。女性解放運動を展開し,12年人民戦線事件で検挙される。19年加藤勘十と再婚。21年女性初の衆議院議員(当選2回,社会党)。25年参議院議員(当選4回)。49年政界を引退し,日本家族計画連盟会長。63年国連人口賞。平成7年家族計画国際協力財団会長に就任。平成13年12月22日死去。104歳。東京出身。学習院女学部卒。旧姓は広田。本名は静枝。著作に「ひとすじの道」など。
