Tokyo Women's Medical University

Japanese: 東京女子医科大学 - とうきょうじょしいかだいがく
Tokyo Women's Medical University

It is a private institution. It was founded in 1900 (Meiji 33) by Yayoi Yoshioka, the 27th female doctor in Japan, and her husband Arata Yoshioka, with four students to help women who wanted to take the medical license exam. It was renamed Tokyo Women's Medical School in 1912 (Meiji 45), and became Tokyo Women's Medical College in 1947 (Showa 22) under the University Act. It transitioned to a new university system in 1952. As of 2010 (Heisei 22), it consists of the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Nursing, Department of Nursing, and graduate schools of Medicine and Nursing. The motivation of the founder, Yoshioka, was "to improve the social status of women, which was extremely low at the time," and it is proud of its tradition as the only women's medical school not only in Japan but in the world. It is located at 8-1 Kawada-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo.
