[Ancient and medieval genealogy]
The first appearance of the name was in the 4th year of the Yoro era (720) in the Shoku Nihongi, which reads "Nihongi...30 volumes of the Chronicles, 1 volume of genealogy," and it is assumed to be an imperial genealogy, but no such thing has been handed down. The oldest surviving examples include the Kaifu genealogy (created in 847, National Treasure) in the possession of the Kaifu family of Kago Shrine in Tango Province, which was copied in the 9th or 10th century, the Wake genealogy (Enchin popular family genealogy, Important Cultural Property) in the possession of Onjoji Temple, and the Yoshu Nii genealogy (written by Gyozen, Important Cultural Property) in the possession of Isono Shrine (formerly owned by Okura Kumema). A comprehensive genealogy was the "Records of the 180 Divisions of Ministers, Ban no Miyatsuko, Kuni no Miyatsuko, and Komin to Kohon" (Nihon Shoki), which is said to have been compiled by Prince Shotoku and Soga no Umako, but it was burned and is not clear.

　名称としては《続日本紀》養老4年(720)条に，〈日本紀……紀卅巻系図一巻〉とあるのが初見とされ，帝王系図と推測されているが，伝存しない。現存最古のものには，9,10世紀に書写された丹後国籠神社海部氏所蔵の海部系図(847成立，国宝)，園城寺所蔵の和気系図(円珍俗姓系図，重文)，伊曾乃神社所蔵(大倉粂馬旧蔵)の与州新居（にい）系図(凝然筆，重文)がある。系譜のまとまったものとしては，聖徳太子･蘇我馬子編纂とされる〈臣連伴造国造百八十部幷公民等本記〉(《日本書紀》)があったが，焼失してつまびらかでない。…
