...Moray eels are eaten locally, but caution is required as there are many species in the south that contain the highly poisonous ciguatera toxin, such as the golden moray, the flower moray, and the cobblestone moray. The moray eel Gymnothorax kidako (illustration) is found from the Kanto region of Honshu south to the Philippines, and is the most commonly seen species, living on reefs near the shore. It also has local names such as Namada (outer Boso) and Kidako (Misaki, Kanagawa Prefecture).
