A thin tube (catheter) covered with Dacron, approximately 1-3 mm in diameter, is inserted into each chamber of the heart, the vena cava, the pulmonary artery, the aorta, the coronary artery, etc., to directly observe the morphology and function of the heart and vascular system. Since a vein or artery is cut open and a catheter is inserted through it, cardiac catheterization is called an invasive test, whereas X-rays and electrocardiograms are called non-invasive tests. The first person to perform cardiac catheterization on a human in 1929 was Werner Forssmann (1904-79) of Germany. At the age of 25, he inserted a ureteral catheter through a vein in his left arm to the right atrium, and he attempted cardiac catheterization a total of seven times. ...
