…In Japan, Prince Shotoku is known to have gathered kings and nobles in April 598 (the 6th year of the reign of Empress Suiko) to give a lecture on the Lotus Sutra and the Sacred Wisdom Sutra, and various Buddhist ceremonies were held as Buddhism flourished and spread. The Yuima-e, Saisho-e, Yuishiki-e, Kusha-e, Kegon-e, and Hokke-e ceremonies, which sought to clarify the gist of the sutra treatises, the Ninno-e and Daihannya-e ceremonies, which prayed for the peace of the nation, and the Nehan-e, which commemorated the death of Shakyamuni and expressed gratitude, were eventually linked to the belief in the founder of a sect or temple, and statues and halls of the founder were built and memorial services were held on the anniversary of his death. In the Middle Ages, Buddhist ceremonies to pray for the repose of the souls of ancestors also became common, and sometimes included a meal, which continues to this day. …
