Vinylidene chloride

One of the dichloroethylene derivatives of ethylene. The correct name is 1,1-dichloroethene. It is a volatile colorless liquid with an odor similar to chloroform.

Industrially, it is produced by dehydrochlorinating 1,1,2-trichloroethane, obtained by adding chlorine to chloroethene (chloroethylene, vinyl chloride) or substituting chlorine into 1,2-dichloroethane, with sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide. It is an extremely unstable compound that can explode when exposed to oxygen and produce peroxides, so it is stored underwater or in the dark. It is easily polymerized by light, heat, or catalysts. Copolymers with vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, etc. are often used, and are used as raw materials for synthetic fibers and food preservation film for wrapping, known by the trademark name Saran, which has high chemical resistance and low moisture absorption. It is also used in automobile interiors and fishing nets. The vapor has an anesthetic effect and is harmful.

エチレンの塩素二置換体の一つ。正しくは1,1-ジクロロエテンという。クロロホルムに似たにおいのする揮発性無色液体。

　工業的には、クロロエテン（クロロエチレン、塩化ビニル）への塩素付加または1,2-ジクロロエタンの塩素置換により得られる1,1,2-トリクロロエタンを、水酸化ナトリウム、水酸化カルシウムにより脱塩化水素することにより製造する。きわめて不安定な化合物で、酸素に触れ過酸化物をつくり爆発することがあるので水中や暗所で貯蔵する。光、熱、触媒により重合しやすい。塩化ビニル、酢酸ビニル、アクリロニトリルなどとの共重合体がよく用いられ、合成繊維、商標名サランで知られる、耐薬品性が大きく吸湿性の小さいラップ用食品保存フィルムなどの原料となる。自動車の内装、漁網などにも使われる。蒸気は麻酔作用があり有害である。
