Japanese: ニクバエ(肉蠅) - ニクバエ（英語表記）flesh fly

A general term for insects belonging to the family Sarcophagidae of the order Diptera. They are ovoviviparous, laying first-instar larvae on meat or fish, which are usually the larvae's food. There are also species that parasitize subcutaneously in humans and mammals, species that parasitize in wasp nests, and species that parasitize Lepidoptera larvae. There are several hundred species known worldwide, and about 90 species in Japan, but only a few species have a known life cycle. Adults are 3 to 20 mm long, generally gray, have three black vertical lines on their thorax and back, and many have a checkered pattern on their abdomen.

双翅目ニクバエ科Sarcophagidaeに属する昆虫の総称。卵胎生で，通常幼虫の食物である肉や魚などに1齢幼虫を生みつける。このほか，ヒトや哺乳類の皮下に寄生する種や，ハチの巣に寄生するもの，鱗翅類の幼虫に寄生するものなどがある。世界に数百種，日本からは約90種知られているが，生活史のわかっている種はわずかである。成虫は体長3～20mm，一般に灰色で，胸背に3本の黒縦線をもち，腹部は市松模様のものが多い。
