Hydractinia epiconcha

Japanese: カイウミヒドラ(英語表記)Hydractinia epiconcha
Hydractinia epiconcha
Class Hydrozoa, Order Anthoathecata, Family Hydridae. The shell of the wrinkled conch (→Snails), with a shell length of about 2 cm, has a membranous hydroid root on top of which the zooids grow in clusters, making the shell invisible. The inside of the hydroid root has a chitinous skeleton, with many spines protruding from the surface. The zooids are about 5 mm long. The zooids are polymorphic, with vegetative polyps, finger-like polyps, and reproductive polyps, each of which plays a role in nutrition and reproduction. The vegetative polyps are the largest, with 20 to 30 tentacles around their mouths, and the reproductive polyps have several reproductive bodies attached in a ring. There is no jellyfish-like stage in the life cycle. They are commonly found on rocky reefs in the intertidal zone and shallow waters from central Honshu to Kyushu.
