A mansion in Heian-kyo. It occupies an area of 1 block on the west side of Oi-mikamon Minami-Karasuma (Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City). It was named after Prince Koretaka (844-897), the son of Emperor Montoku, who was called Ononomiya. It later became the throne of the Grand Minister of State Fujiwara Saneyori (900-970), and was passed down to his grandson and adopted son Sanesuke (957-1046). During Sanesuke's time, Ononomiya was a typical shinden-zukuri (chambered palace) style building with a pond to the south of the shinden and opposing buildings to the east, west, and north. A recitation hall was built to the southeast of the pond, making it famous as a noble throne. After Saneyori passed it on to his daughter, Chifugu, it was passed down through the female line and continued until the Kamakura period despite being hit by fires several times. Because Saneyori was called Ono no Miya Palace, the line of his sons Yoritada and Saneyori, and his grandsons Kinto and Sukehira, was known as the Ononomiya family (lineage), and was also famous for its court etiquette and customs. However, the Kujo line, which continued from Saneyori's younger brother Morosuke to Kaneie and Michinaga, became the main lineage of the regent family, and the Ononomiya family lost influence after the mid-Heian period.
