...Toads have developed ear glands behind their eyes, and the milky white liquid they secrete contains poisonous ingredients that cause pain to dogs that bite them, and can cause keratitis in people who play with them. Although they move slowly, they can repel attacks from snakes, cats, and weasels, so they were given names such as "Toad Hermits" as a sign of their mysterious powers. For these reasons, these animals have been considered to have evil powers, and many strange stories have been told in the early modern period. ...
