A state in the midwest of Brazil. Its name means "great forest." Its area is 881,001 km2, and its population is 2,313,600 (1995). Its population density is 2.6 people/km2. Its capital is Cuiabá. It used to be a large state stretching from 7°21' south latitude in the north to 24°06' south latitude in March 1979, but due to the overall population increase and the progress of development in the southern region, the southern part was separated and became independent as Mato Grosso do Sul.
