1754‐1840 A politician and thinker of noble birth in the city of Milot in the south of France. He served as mayor of Milot and a member of the prefecture's council, but resigned his position in opposition to the Constitution of the Clergy and went into exile in Heidelberg in 1791. It was there that he wrote his masterpiece, "Political and Religious Power in Civilized Society" (3 volumes, 1796). Along with J.M. de Maistre, he was a leading theocratic debater, asserting the absoluteness of religion and authority, and was passionate about defending tradition and rejecting revolutionary principles and Rousseau's theory of the social contract. He returned to France in 1797 and, during the First Empire, co-founded the magazine "Mercure de France" with Chateaubriand. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
