Persian poet. As an anthem poet, he holds the highest position in the history of Persian literature. Born in Abibard, a small city in the Khorasan region of eastern Iran. He studied in Tus and was famous as a poet well versed in astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, etc. He served as a court poet to the Seljuk sultan Sanjar, and in 1153, when the sultan was captured by the Ghuz Turks and the Khorasan region was plundered and left in ruins, he composed a poem known as "Tears of Khorasan," which has been extremely famous since ancient times. After Sanjar's death, he lost his protector and spent his later years in despair, mainly in Balkh. His works include the Anwari Collection, which consists of anthems and lyric poems, and are known for their extremely elaborate techniques, ornate expressions, and difficulty to understand. He was also known as a satirical poet, which sometimes caused a stir. He also excelled in the field of lyric poetry, but remained silent in his later years.

ペルシアの詩人。頌詩(しょうし)詩人としてペルシア文学史上最高の地位を占める。イラン東部ホラサーン地方の小都市アビーバルドに生まれる。トゥースにおいて学を修め、天文学、数学、哲学などにも精通した詩人として名高い。セルジューク朝のスルタン、サンジャルに宮廷詩人として仕え、1153年スルタンがグズ・トルコ人の捕虜になり、ホラサーン地方が略奪され荒廃に帰したときに詠んだ詩は『ホラサーンの涙』として知られ、古来きわめて名高い。サンジャルの死後保護者を失い、晩年は失意のうちに主としてバルフで過ごした。作品には頌詩、叙情詩などからなる『アンワリー詩集』があり、極度に技巧を凝らし華麗な表現が多く難解なことで定評がある。風刺詩人としても知られたが、そのために騒ぎを起こしたこともある。叙情詩の分野においても優れていたが、晩年は沈黙を守った。
