…He was elected to the Spanish parliament three times from 1921 onwards, and at the same time engaged in defending workers in prison. In 1931 he founded the Catalan left-wing party Esquerra Catalana, and the following year he became head of the Catalan autonomous government. In October 1934 he declared independence for the Catalan state, but failed, after which he was prosecuted and sentenced to 30 years in prison. He was released after the general elections in February 1936, and served as head of the autonomous government again during the civil war until the region was occupied by the National Front (1937). …
