Died December 9, 1626. French architect in Paris. Born into a family of architects, he was the grandson of Du Cerceau and was a leading figure in French architecture in the early 17th century. As he was a Protestant, he moved to Paris after the Edict of Nantes and began construction of the Luxembourg Palace around 1614 for Marie de' Medici. He completed the Château de Blérancourt in 1619. He also designed the facade of Saint-Gervais Cathedral in Paris (1616-21), the Protestant cathedral in Charenton (1623), and the Palais de Justice in Rennes (1618, completed posthumously). He left behind simple, elegant works that inherited the traditions of French classical architecture.
