Frontier - Frontier (English spelling)

Originally it means "border" or "boundary" in English, but it is also used to mean "frontier area", but especially in American history, during the period of western expansion, the term "frontier" was used to refer to the settlements on the outermost side of white settlements, as well as the undeveloped areas adjacent to them. The United States Census Bureau defines a "frontier" as an area with a population density of 2 to 6 people per square mile (about 2.59 square kilometers), and the frontier line is a line drawn roughly north to south connecting such areas. Since the colonial period in the 17th century, the frontier line continued to move westward with the continuous westward movement of the white population, and disappeared in 1890. It is said that the existence of the frontier for such a long period of time had a great influence on American culture and national character.

元来は「国境」または「境界」を意味する英語で、「辺境地域」の意にも用いられるが、とくにアメリカ史では、西部開拓時代に、白人の定着地域のもっとも外側にある開拓地、あるいはそれに接する未開拓地を含めて「フロンティア」とよんだ。アメリカ合衆国の国勢調査局は、1平方マイル（約2.59平方キロメートル）の土地に2人ないし6人の人口密度をもつ地域を「フロンティア」と定義し、そのような地域を結んでほぼ南北に引かれる線をフロンティア線とした。17世紀の植民地時代以来、フロンティア線は白人人口の絶え間ない西漸運動の進行に伴って西方へ移動し続け、1890年に消滅した。フロンティアがこのように長期にわたって存在したことにより、アメリカの文化や国民性は大きな影響を受けたといわれる。
