A group of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic Ocean, about 700 km west of Morocco. Administratively, it is considered an autonomous region and is called Funchal Province. It consists of the main island of Madeira and its associated small islands. The area is mountainous and made of volcanic rocks, and is famous for its bananas and grape wine (Madeira), as well as for its scenic tourist destinations and health resorts. Madeira's evergreen broad-leaved forest was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1999. The inhabitants are mainly of Portuguese descent. Colonization progressed after the Portuguese arrived in 1419, and since the Age of Discovery, it has become a key location for maritime traffic connecting the Americas with Africa and Europe.
