A village in Niihari County in central Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 8,729 (1995). Located on the north shore of Lake Kasumigaura, east of Ishioka City, the western part is a plateau and the eastern part is a lowland along the Sonobe River which flows into Lake Kasumigaura. In addition to pig farming, the area produces lotus root and other vegetables, pears, persimmons, and more. In 1964, the Tamasato Industrial Park was developed around Shintakahama Station on the Kashima Railway, and currently factories producing plastics, machinery, feed, and more are in operation. The area is home to the Yawatawaki Shell Mound, which dates back to the early Jomon period, and the Funazuka Kofun, which is thought to have been built in the mid-6th century. 茨城県中央部,新治(にいはり)郡の村。人口8729(1995)。霞ヶ浦北岸,石岡市の東に位置し,西部は台地,東部は霞ヶ浦に注ぐ園部川沿いの低地である。養豚と並んでレンコンなどの野菜や梨,柿などを産する。1964年に鹿島鉄道新高浜駅周辺に玉里工業団地が造成され,現在,プラスチック,機械,飼料などの工場が操業している。縄文前期の八幡脇貝塚,6世紀中ごろの築造とされる舟塚古墳がある。【千葉 立也】
