...The islands are mostly volcanic, some of which are active, treeless, and subject to strong winds and dense fog. They were discovered by the Russians in 1741 and called the Katherine Islands, but became part of the United States when they purchased Alaska in 1867. The influx of Russian fur trappers and traders caused a sharp decline in the fauna and population of the native Aleut people, who numbered 25,000.
