Indonesian politician. While working as a lawyer, he participated in the anti-fascist movement, and was arrested and sentenced to death during the Japanese military administration, but was spared due to the pleas of Sukarno and others. After independence, he held important government positions with Sjahrir, who was also popular as a non-cooperator with Japan, and promoted a cooperative policy with the Netherlands as Minister of Information, Minister of Defense, and Prime Minister. However, in 1948, he formed the People's Democratic Front, and in August of that year, he agreed with the proposal of Indonesian Communist Party leader Muso and others who had returned from Moscow to form a united front to establish a national government through a bourgeois democratic revolution. In September of the same year, he participated in an anti-central government military coup in Madiun, East Java, but the rebellion was suppressed by President Sukarno and the military mainstream, and he was executed (Madiun Incident). Taking advantage of the weakening of the military due to the civil war, the Netherlands invaded Indonesia in December of the same year and arrested Sukarno and other government leaders in Yogyakarta, but faced resistance from the republican army and criticism from international public opinion, and in July 1949 Sukarno and others were released and a ceasefire was reached.

インドネシア共和国の政治家。弁護士として活動するかたわら反ファシズム運動に参加，日本軍政中逮捕され死刑判決を受けるが，スカルノらの嘆願で刑を免れる。独立後，同じく対日非協力者として声望を集めたシャフリルとともに政府の要職につき，情報相，国防相，首相として，オランダとの協調路線を進めた。しかし1948年には，人民民主戦線を結成，同年８月，モスクワから帰国した，インドネシア共産党指導者ムソらのブルジョア民主革命による民族政府樹立のための統一戦線の提唱に同調，同年９月東部ジャワのマディウン市における反中央政府の軍事クーデタに参加するが，反乱は大統領スカルノと軍主流によって鎮圧され処刑された（マディウン事件）。この内戦による軍の弱体化に乗じて同年12月オランダはインドネシアに侵攻，ジョクジャカルタでスカルノをはじめ政府首脳を拘束するが，共和国軍の抵抗と国際世論の非難を浴び，1949年７月スカルノらを釈放して停戦した。
