A hero of Greek mythology, known as the commander of the Argos army led by seven generals who attacked Thebes. As king of Argos, he launched this expedition to help Polynices, the son of Oedipus who had fled from Thebes, to marry his daughter Argeia and to help him regain the throne from his brother Eteocles. However, the expedition ended in a disastrous failure, with six of his generals, including Polynices, killed in battle, and only Adrastus managed to escape thanks to the swift divine horse Areion. Ten years later, Adrastus participated in an expedition organized by the sons of the seven generals known as the Epigoni, which ended in a great victory for the Argos, but it is said that Adrastus died of heartbreak on the way home, as only his own son Aegialeus was killed in battle among the Epigoni.
