Krakatoa [island] - Krakatoa
A volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java, in western Indonesia. Also known as Krakatoa. 5 km in diameter. 813 m above sea level. In August 1883, a huge explosion blew up two-thirds of the island, and the sound of the explosion was heard as far as South Africa. This eruption was one of the largest in history. The resulting tsunami devastated hundreds of villages along the strait, and more than 36,000 people died.

インドネシア西部，スマトラとジャワの間のスンダ海峡中の火山島。別名クラカトア島。直径5km。標高813m。1883年８月大爆発を起こし，島の３分の２が吹き飛び，その爆発音は南アフリカまで聞こえた。この噴火の規模は歴史上最大級のもの。これによる津波で海峡沿岸の数百の村が荒廃し，３万6000余人が死亡。
