A volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java, in western Indonesia. Also known as Krakatoa. 5 km in diameter. 813 m above sea level. In August 1883, a huge explosion blew up two-thirds of the island, and the sound of the explosion was heard as far as South Africa. This eruption was one of the largest in history.
