A region in southern Italy. It has an area of 19,347 km2 and a population of 4.07 million (1994). It occupies the southeastern part of the Italian peninsula, running along the Adriatic Sea, and the southern coast of the Salento Peninsula at the southeastern end faces the Gulf of Taranto on the Ionian Sea. It has five provinces: Foggia, Bari, Taranto, Brindisi, and Lecce, and its capital is Bari. In a mountainous Italy, this region is mostly plains or hilly plateaus, with only the Gargano Peninsula, which juts out into the Adriatic Sea in the northwest, and the borders with the Molise and Campania regions being mountainous, and there are only a few mountains over 1,000 m above sea level.
