Matsumoto Keido - Matsumoto Keido

A patriot of the late Edo period. The second son of Innami Koreshige, a servant of the Kariya Domain in Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture). He was raised by the Matsumoto family. His name was originally Mosei, later Kore, and he was commonly known as Kenzaburo, and his pen name was Keido. He studied under Okuda Touen, a Confucian scholar of the Owari Domain, and later studied at Shoheiko in Edo. In 1859 (Ansei 6), he opened a private school in Nagoya, but two years later he moved to Osaka and opened the Soshoko Gakusha with Matsubayashi Rennosuke and Oka Rokumon, who were his classmates at Shoheiko. While he actively preached Sonnno Joi (revere the expulsion of the emperors) to his students, he also planned to raise an army to overthrow the shogunate together with Yoshimura Torataro and Fujimoto Tesseki, whom he had met in Kyoto. On August 13, 1863 (Bunkyu 3), the Imperial Council decision on the Imperial Visit to Yamato showed that the Choshu clan was preparing to carry out an overthrow of the shogunate. In response, on the 14th, he organized the Tenchu-gumi (a group of soldiers who fought to overthrow the shogunate) together with Yoshimura, Fujimoto, and over 30 other comrades, and became its president together with Yoshimura and the others, and raised an army in Gojo, Yamato. However, the situation changed drastically with the political upheaval of August 18, and the Imperial Council was called off, and he was pursued and killed in the Battle of Washikaguchi. His books include "Keido Bunko" and "Keido Iko."
