Jakhe (English spelling)
A representative Thai plucked string instrument. For both solo and ensemble use. It is spoon-shaped, 140 cm long and 12 cm high, with four 8 cm-high legs at the head and one under the tail. It is played with a 5-6 cm long ivory harp, and is a zither harp like the Chinese and Japanese zithers, but the playing style is more like a lute. In Europe, it is called a crocodile harp because of its resemblance to a crocodile, but its original shape is exactly like a crocodile, and it is recorded in historical records from the Tang Dynasty as an instrument from the country of Qi (eastern Burma, now Myanmar) under the name "crocodile harp." The Indian version was introduced to Burma and called majaong, and in documents from the Qing Dynasty it is recorded as "miqiongzong." It is thought that this was modified to a boat-shaped body by the Thaling people during the Pegu Dynasty in Burma, and then changed to a spoon-shaped body when it entered the Khmer Empire. In Cambodia it is called Takhay, although Chakhay is said to be a pronunciation of this or a transliteration of Chorokkhay (crocodile).

タイの代表的撥弦楽器。独奏,合奏両用。全長約 140cm,高さ約 12cmのスプーン形で,高さ 8cmの足が頭部に4本と尾の下に1本ついている。象牙製の長さ5~6cmの義甲で弾き,形態的には日本,中国の琴類と同様のツィター属であるが,奏法はリュート属的。ヨーロッパではその形が鰐 (わに) に似ているところからクロコダイル・ハープと呼ぶが,その祖形はまさに鰐をかたどっており,唐時代の史書にも驃国 (ビルマ〈現ミャンマー〉東部) の楽器として「鰐琴」の名で記されている。インド起源のものがビルマに入ってマジョーンなどと呼ばれ,清朝の資料では「密穹総」と記される。これがビルマ,ペグー朝のときタライン人によって舟形胴に改められ,さらにクメールに入ってスプーン形になったと考えられる。カンボジアではタケーと呼ばれるが,チャケーはこの音訛であるとも,またチョロッケー (鰐) の音訳ともいわれている。
