Jakhe (English spelling)

Jakhe (English spelling)
A representative Thai plucked string instrument. For both solo and ensemble use. It is spoon-shaped, 140 cm long and 12 cm high, with four 8 cm-high legs at the head and one under the tail. It is played with a 5-6 cm long ivory harp, and is a zither harp like the Chinese and Japanese zithers, but the playing style is more like a lute. In Europe, it is called a crocodile harp because of its resemblance to a crocodile, but its original shape is exactly like a crocodile, and it is recorded in historical records from the Tang Dynasty as an instrument from the country of Qi (eastern Burma, now Myanmar) under the name "crocodile harp." The Indian version was introduced to Burma and called majaong, and in documents from the Qing Dynasty it is recorded as "miqiongzong." It is thought that this was modified to a boat-shaped body by the Thaling people during the Pegu Dynasty in Burma, and then changed to a spoon-shaped body when it entered the Khmer Empire. In Cambodia it is called Takhay, although Chakhay is said to be a pronunciation of this or a transliteration of Chorokkhay (crocodile).
