...However, there were not no notable pumps in ancient times. The screw pump, said to have been invented by Archimedes, was capable of continuously pumping water and was based on the same concept as the screw pumps used today. Later, in the 15th century, Leonardo da Vinci invented the piston pump, and Peter Morris successfully supplied water to the city of London using a water wheel-driven piston pump (1582). However, it was not until the end of the 18th century, when steam engines began to be used as a power source, that pumps became significantly more widespread and developed.
