Masamori Hotta

A Shogunate elder in the early Edo period. The eldest son of Masayoshi. Tokugawa Iemitsu's wet nurse, Kasuga no Tsubone, was his step-grandmother, and because of this connection, he always served Iemitsu from the age of 13. In 1623 (Genna 9), he was appointed Dewa no Kami with a 700 koku income, and later Kaga no Kami. In 1625 (Kan'ei 2), he was given 5,000 koku. The following year, he became the head clerk of the page group with a 10,000 koku income. In March 1627, he was ranked as one of the Rokuninshu (later the Wakadoshiyori), and in May, like Matsudaira Nobutsuna, he became an elder. In March 1629, he was given 35,000 koku in the Kawagoe Domain in Musashi Province. In 1731, he fell ill, and in March of the following year, he was released from his post, and transferred to the Matsumoto Domain in Shinano Province with a fief of 100,000 koku. This was a consideration from Iemitsu, who was concerned about Masamori's health. In July 1646, he was transferred to the Sakura Domain in Shimousa Province (Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture) with a fief of 110,000 koku. Around this time, Iemitsu often visited Masamori's residence and his villa in Asakusa, and also ordered him to accompany him on hunting trips. One theory is that he was Iemitsu's partner in the shudo movement, and he was involved in the shogunate government as Iemitsu's closest aide. When Iemitsu died in April 1651 (Keian 4), he returned to his residence and committed suicide. His wife was the daughter of Sakai Tadakatsu.

江戸前期の幕府年寄。正吉の長男。徳川家光の乳母春日局は義理の祖母に当たり,その縁で13歳のときから常に家光の側に勤仕する。元和9(1623)年,700石,出羽守に叙任,のち加賀守。寛永2(1625)年,5000石。翌年,小姓組番頭となり,1万石。10年3月六人衆(のちの若年寄)に列し,5月松平信綱と同じく年寄並となる。12年3月武蔵国川越藩,3万5000石。14年病気になり,翌年3月職をゆるされ,信濃国松本藩10万石に転封。これは正盛の健康を心配した家光の配慮だった。19年7月,下総国佐倉藩(千葉県佐倉市)11万石に転封した。このころ家光は,しばしば正盛の居邸や浅草の別荘を訪れ,また狩りなどの供を命じている。一説には家光の衆道の相手だったといわれ,家光第一の側近として幕政に関与した。慶安4(1651)年4月,家光が死ぬと,居邸に帰り殉死した。室は酒井忠勝の娘。
