In the Catholic Church, an interdict is a punishment that prohibits believers from participating in church services or events. There are several types, including personal, local, partial, and general interdicts. The sacrament of extreme unction was recognized as an exception, and clergy were allowed to perform liturgies secretly in their rooms. It appeared in the 6th century and was initially limited to churches in a single city, but was expanded to a diocese in the 9th century and to a country in the 12th century. It is a lighter punishment than excommunication, but in its heyday, popes frequently used it in disputes with kings. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
