Mattheson - Mattheson (English spelling) Johann Mattheson

German composer, organist, music theorist, and diplomat. Born on September 28th in Hamburg, the son of a customs official. He received a wide range of education, including music, foreign languages, dance, and horse riding, and grew up with the local opera as his "university of music." He was a singer at the Hamburg Opera from 1696, and made his debut as a composer in 1703 with the opera "Pleiades." He met Handel in 1703, and although they fought a duel at a young age, they remained lifelong friends. He became a private tutor for the son of the British ambassador, and rose from secretary to acting ambassador. As a musician, he became musical director at Hamburg Cathedral in 1715, and in 1719 also served as kapellemaster at the court of the Duke of Holstein. In 1728, he retired from his position as a musician due to hearing loss, but in 1741 he became secretary to the Duke's envoy. He was also active as a music theorist, and wrote 25 books, of which "Complete Kapellemaster" (1739) is particularly important. He died on April 17, 1964, and was buried in St. Michael's Church, according to his will.

ドイツの作曲家、オルガン奏者、音楽理論家、外交官。9月28日ハンブルクの税関吏の息子として生まれる。音楽はもとより、各国語、舞踏、乗馬などの多彩な教育を受け、同地のオペラを自らの「音楽の大学」として成長した。1696年以来ハンブルク・オペラの歌手となり、99年にはオペラ『プレイアデス』で作曲家としてもデビューした。1703年ヘンデルと出会い、若さのあまり決闘までするが終生友情を保った。イギリス大使の息子の家庭教師となったのがきっかけで、秘書官から大使代理にまで出世したが、音楽家としても15年ハンブルク大聖堂音楽監督となり、19年にはホルシュタイン公宮廷楽長も兼ねる。28年、難聴のため音楽家としての職を退くが、41年には同公公使秘書官となる。音楽理論家としての活躍も顕著で25に及ぶ著作があり、とくに『完全なる楽長』（1739）は重要である。64年4月17日に世を去り、遺言に従って聖ミカエル教会に埋葬された。
