〘Noun〙 A copper coin with a round hole that was minted from the 6th year of the Yongle era ( 1408 ) to the 22nd year ( 1424 ) of the Ming Dynasty in China. It was imported to Japan in large quantities from the time it was first minted, and circulated as one of the standard currencies for a long time until the early Edo period. Imitations were also actively produced from the end of the Muromachi period, and at one point they were regulated to be four times as valuable as other coins, but as inferior imitation coins began to circulate, their use was banned in 1608 ( Keicho 13 ) as part of the shogunate's policy of unifying currency. In addition to copper coins, gold and silver coins were also minted, and it is said that these were specially made by the Toyotomi clan during the Tensho period ( 1573-92 ) as a kind of reward for service.
