The fourth king of the current Rattanakosin dynasty of Thailand. Reigned from 1851 to 1868. Also known as King Phra Chomkrao or Rama IV. Although he had the highest right of succession to the throne, he abdicated the throne to his half-brother for political reasons and spent 27 years as a monk before ascending to the throne. During that time, he came into contact with Christian civilization through his friendship with a French priest, and actively studied advanced Western civilization using the English he learned from an American missionary, playing a leading role among the enlightened intellectual group of the time.
