Bat flies

Japanese: コウモリバエ - こうもりばえ（英語表記）bat flies

A general term for insects belonging to the Strebridae family of bat flies in the Diptera order, or a single species of this family. Small flies with a body length of 1.5 to 3 mm. This family is considered to be closely related to spider flies, but in many respects it retains more typical Diptera characteristics than spider flies, such as a large number of ommatidia in the compound eyes, well-developed wings, and a flat thorax and abdomen. Most are external parasites of bats, but females of the Ascodipterinae subfamily live as maggots that have lost their wings and legs, and inhabit the subcutaneous tissue of bats, living as internal parasites.

双翅目コウモリバエ科Streblidaeに属する昆虫の総称，またはこのうちの1種を指す。小型のハエで，体長1.5～3mm。この科はクモバエに近縁なグループと考えられているが，複眼の個眼の数が多いこと，よく発達した翅をもつこと，胸部や腹部が扁平でないことなど，多くの点でクモバエより一般的な双翅目の特徴をよく保持している。多くはコウモリに外部寄生するが，Ascodipterinae亜科に属するものの雌では，翅も脚も脱落したうじのような形でコウモリの皮下組織に入り込み，内部寄生者のような生活を行う。
