Spanish playwright. Along with Lope de Vega and Tirso de Molina, he is one of the three great dramatists of the Golden Age, and was highly praised by German Romantics in later years. Born into a distinguished family, he studied theology at a Jesuit school and the University of Salamanca, then turned to literature at around the age of 20, but was ordained a priest at the age of 50 and became an honorary priest to King Philip IV. He wrote 120 plays on three basic themes: loyalty to the king, absolute devotion to the Catholic Church, and honor or respectability.

スペインの劇作家。ローペ･デ･ベガ，ティルソ･デ･モリーナと共に〈黄金世紀〉を代表する三大劇作家の一人で，後年ドイツ･ロマン派から高い評価を受けた。名家の出身で，イエズス会の学校とサラマンカ大学で神学を学んだ後，20歳ころから文学に転じたが，50歳のとき司祭の叙階を受けて，国王フェリペ4世の名誉司祭にもなった。国王に対する忠誠，カトリック教会に対する絶対的帰依，名誉あるいは体面感情の三つを基本的なテーマとして，120編におよぶ戯曲を書いた。
