Founded in 1920 as Toyo Cork Kogyo, the company changed its name to Toyo Kogyo in 1927 and expanded into machine tools. In 1931, it began producing three-wheeled trucks. In 1984, it adopted its current name. It was known for its Mazda three-wheeled vehicles, but after World War II, it made the switch to light four-wheeled vehicles and then small cars, focusing on rotary engine vehicles. It focused on domestic sales, but expanded overseas production. However, sales slumped during the oil crisis, and the company faced a management crisis. With the support of the former Sumitomo Bank, it managed to overcome the crisis in 1976, and in 1979 it entered into a capital alliance with Ford Motor Company. In 1996, it became a subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company. Sales volume for the fiscal year ending March 2011 was 1.25 million units. Head office: Fuchu-cho, Hiroshima Prefecture, factories: Hofu, Miyoshi, and others. Capital in 2011 was 186.5 billion yen, sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 2,325.6 billion yen, and net income for the period was minus 60 billion yen. Sales breakdown (%) is vehicles 73, parts 9, parts for overseas production 6, and others 11. Overseas sales ratio is 77%.

1920年東洋コルク工業として設立され,1927年には東洋工業と改称し工作機械に進出。1931年からは三輪トラックの生産を開始した。1984年現社名に。マツダ三輪車で知られたが,第2次大戦後,軽四輪,次いで小型自動車で転換を図り,ロータリーエンジン積載車に力点を置く。国内販売を主力とするが,海外生産が拡大。しかし,オイルショックで販売不振に陥り経営危機を迎えた。旧住友銀行の支援などもあり1976年危機を脱し,1979年には米フォード社と資本提携関係に入る。さらに1996年フォード・モーター社傘下に入った。2011年3月期販売台数125万台。本社広島県府中町,工場防府,三次ほか。2011年資本金1865億円,2011年3月期売上高2兆3256億円,当期純益マイナス600億円。売上構成(%)は,車両73,部品9,海外生産用部品6,その他11。海外売上比率77%。
